Surrey RoadSafe has launched the Fatal Five road safety campaign in response to a sharp rise in serious road incidents across the county. Between 2021 and 2023, 2,155 people were killed or seriously injured on Surrey’s roads.
Running throughout April, the campaign highlights five major causes of these tragedies:
-
Excessive/Inappropriate Speed – Driving too fast for conditions, not just over the limit.
-
Distracted Driving – Includes mobile phone use, eating, and drinking.
-
Drink & Drug Driving – Operating a vehicle over legal substance limits.
-
Not Wearing Seat Belts – This applies to both drivers and passengers, including incorrect use.
-
Careless/Inconsiderate Driving – Risky overtaking, tailgating, running red lights, etc.
The initiative aims to raise awareness and promote safer driving behaviour to save lives.
