Phase 2 of the Parish Council’s local speed monitoring programme has begun, focusing on Crocknorth Road and Green Dene. These rural roads still carry the national speed limit (60mph) in some sections.
Both roads are narrow, winding, and poorly lit, and are used daily by walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. They are also crossed by public footpaths and bridleways, and are home to residents, driveways, and historic features, including the Grade II listed Lovelace Bridge on Crocknorth Road.
The Parish Council has asked Surrey County Council to review the speed limits in line with their Rural Speed Limit Policy, which recognises that 60mph is often inappropriate for roads like these. Automatic Traffic Counters (ATCs) have been installed and will remain in place for one week to gather evidence supporting safer speed limits and improved safety for all road users.
As part of this phase, an ATC has also been installed at the bridleway crossing near Effingham Junction Station.
We will continue to update residents on the findings and any next steps towards safer local roads.
